 GRAMMAR 1      Was / Were going to and would

It is used to express a planned action in the past.

   - It is formed with "was" for the first person singular (I) and "were" for the second person (you), third person (he/she/it), and plural (we/they).

   Structure: subject + was/were + going to + infinitive verb.

Meeting with two former classmates. 
A: Hello, how are you? It’s been a long time.
B: Hello, everything is fine. Yes, how long! 
A: I’m surprised to see you’re a lawyer, weren’t you going to be a doctor? 
B: Yes, I was going to study medicine, but I fell in love with the law. 
A: Wow, amazing. Are you married? 
B: Absolutely. I heard you were getting married, what happened?
A: I wanted to get married, but days before, my fiancé would run away with his lover. You can believe it!
B: I don’t think so, you were going to travel to Europe, right? 
A: Yes, I was going to travel but due to the cancellation of the marriage the trip was cancelled 
B: It was amazing to meet, I have to go,  I thought I would stay longer but I can’t, goodbye. 
A: Sure, bye.


GRAMMAR 2 Perfect modals

Can have/ Could have
   Used to express possibility in the past.
   Structure: subject + can/could + have + past participle of the verb.
Example: "She could have forgotten her keys".

May have/ Might have Used to express possibility in the past. Structure: subject + may/might + have + past participle of the verb. Example: "They might have missed the train"

Should have Used to express regret or criticism about something that did not happen in the past. Structure: subject + should + have + past participle of the verb. Example: "You should have studied for the exam".

  • I should have studied psychology, but my mother didn’t support me
  • They shouldn’t have bothered that dog, so I bit them
  • They could play at the party but I’m not in time
  • She might have her place in the house, but it’s very small
  • I may have an excellent note on the exam but it was difficul
  • You should have accompanied us to the fair. you would have loved the roller coaste
  • Good thing you didn’t go on a trip. So you wouldn’t have gotten sick.
