The unreal conditional: review and expansion

 
This is used to describe unreal conditions, conditions that do not exist. Use the simple past tense.

If clause (unreal action or condition) ------   result clause (if it were true)




Conversation 

A: Hello! Did you see the new phone that came out?
B: Yes, if I had the money, I would buy it.
A: I see, excellent. If you had saved last month, you would have the money now
B: yes, next time it will be

Examples

  • If you were given the opportunity to leave the country, where would you go? 
  • If I practiced some sport I would be in better physical condition. 
  • If I had done my homework earlier I wouldn't be behind
