This is used to describe unreal conditions, conditions that do not exist. Use the simple past tense.
If clause (unreal action or condition) ------ result clause (if it were true)

Examples
- If you were given the opportunity to leave the country, where would you go?
- If I practiced some sport I would be in better physical condition.
- If I had done my homework earlier I wouldn't be behind
